YouTube has announced something big, something XL actually.
Today, we got a peek at YouTube XL, which is YouTube optimized for your television. It’s a blatant step to compete with Hulu, but it’s a bold step nonetheless.
YouTube XL is redesigned version of the YouTube site. You can run it right in your browser and all you need is Flash.
YouTube XL was built for the TV screen. Therefore, a lot of the community features of the website are gone in the application. There are no comments and you cannot scroll the screen.
You can, however, control the program with the Gmote Android app, a privately made third-party app. I’m sure we’ll see one for iPhone soon enough.
You can also use YouTube XL on your PS3 or Wii, although you won’t be able to watch HD videos.
In the end, it’s a big step into your living roo from YouTube. Will it be a Hulu-killer? Time will tell.
