The Yankees thumped the Phillies 7-3 last night to win the 2009 World Series. The Yanks ended a nine-year drought by winning their 27th world title, winning the Series 4-2 against the defending world champs.
Hideki Matsui was voted MVP after putting together a .615 batting average with 3 home runs and 8 RBIs over the course of the Series. He also drove in 6 runs on Wednesday to tie the World Series record for most RBIs in a single game.
Matsui’s performance matched the record set by former Yankee second baseman Bobby Richardson back in 1960.
Matsui also became the first Japanese player to win the honor. He nailed two-run homer, and hit a two-run double and two-run single to lead New York to a world title in their first season at the new Yankee Stadium.
Andy Pettitte, pitching on three days’ rest, got the win for his second victory of the Series, extending his major league record for career postseason wins to 18.
When closer Mariano Rivera got Shane Victorino to ground to second for the final out, the Yankees poured into the middle of the diamond for a celebration and ran around the outfield carrying championship banners, saluting the crowd of more than 50,000.
Bud Selig presented the championship trophy. “This is their 27th World Series championship, the most in American sports. Congratulations to the New York Yankees,” he said.
The crowd roared in approval when Selig announced Matsui as MVP of the series.
“It’s awesome,” Matsui said through an interpreter after receiving the MVP trophy. “It’s just unbelievable. I’m surprised myself.
“All I can say right now is I feel great.”
