It’s been a while since we’ve seen a good brawl in Major League Baseball. Last night, they made up for lost time as the Yankees and Blue Jays slugged it out in the 8th inning.
Jorge Posada and Jesse Carlson got into it home plate, leading to an all-out, bench-clearing brawl as the Jays defeated the Yankees 10-4.
Earlier in the night, Toronto’s Edwin Encarnacion and second baseman Aaron Hill were plunked by pitches. Carlson then tossed one behind Posada in the 8th inning. Posada shot a nasty look toward the mound and appeared to say, “You don’t want to do that.”
Carlson gestured to Posada and the benches and bullpens emptied, although no punches were thrown at that point and order was restored quickly. Johnny Damon and manager Joe Girardi yanked teammates away, knowing that suspensions could prove costly to the Yankees as they will likely move on to the playoffs.
Moments later, the sh-t hit the fan.
After scoring on Brett Gardner’s double, Posada nudged Carlson, who was heading back to the plate. Home plate umpire Jim Joyce immediately tossed Posada as Carlson hollered at him.
Posada came right back at Carlson. The two dropped to the ground as the benches and bullpens emptied and other fights broke out between home plate and the New York dugout.
This one will have some nasty repercussions.
