Rapper Wyclef Jean, who was born in Haiti, defended The Wyclef Jean Foundation, Inc. on Saturday after various charity groups raised red flags about its accounting methods.

Jean says he’s just baffled by the timing and nature of the allegations levied against his foundation, which has already raised more than $2 million to help victims of last week’s devastating earthquake.

“It is impossible for me to even comprehend the recent attacks on my character and the integrity of my foundation,” Jean said in a prepared statement. “The fact that these attacks come as we are mobilized to meet the greatest human tragedy in the history of Haiti only serves to perplex me even further.”

The 37-year-old artist has been asking those who wish to help the rescue efforts in Haiti to text “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5 to his Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund.

The foundation hopes to airlift medical supplies and foodstuffs to Haiti using a FedEx plane next week, says Hugh Locke, president of the foundation.

Jean says he’s has never profited from his involvement with the foundation and he has given significant amounts of his time and money to the charity.
