A premature baby boy in Paraguay who initially had been declared dead and then found to be alive just hours before his wake, has now died. Angel Salvador was born several months prematurely last week and was then pronounced dead by the medical staff, who did admit later that a doctor never checked the baby's vital signs.
According to Dr. Ernesto Weber, head of pediatrics at the hospital in the capital of Asuncion, the baby weighed in at just 500 grams (17.6 ounces) when he was born.
"Initially, the baby didn't move, he practically didn't have any respiratory reflexes, nor did we hear a heartbeat and, as a result, we declared a premature fetus of 24 weeks dead," Weber said.
The baby later awoke just hours prior to his wake, but following the discovery by his father, Jose Alvarenga, the baby's organs simply couldn't sustain him in their current state.
