In a truly bizarre move, farmers in eastern India have forced their unmarried daughters to plow the parched fields completely naked. They are doing this in an effort to embarrass the weather gods into bringing some much-needed monsoon rain.
Various witnesses have reported that the naked girls did indeed plow the fields while chanting ancient hymns after sunset to invoke the gods. They even said that elderly village women helped the girls drag the plows. I can’t imagine how that would have motivated the gods.
“They (villagers) believe their acts would get the weather gods badly embarrassed, who in turn would ensure bumper crops by sending rains,” Upendra Kumar, a village council official, said.
“This is the most trusted social custom in the area and the villagers have vowed to continue this practice until it rains very heavily.”
So far this year, India has suffered its worst start to the monsoon rains in eight decades, causing drought in some states.
If the tactic works, farmers in many U.S. states have said that they will ask their teenage daughters to do the same thing…in your dreams.
