Bad Call Pirates BravesWell, someone was certainly in a hurry to get home. After going into the 19th inning, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves were playing a game long enough to count as two regulation baseball games.

This game was headed for the history books when it was ended by a horrendous call at the plate where the runner was called “safe” after the catcher clearly made the tag and the runner clearly missed home plate.

Just minutes before 2 a.m. EDT, Pirates catcher Michael McKenry appeared to clearly tag the leg of a sliding Julio Lugo at home plate, but home plate umpire Jerry Meals (A.K.A. “Mr. Magoo”) ruled that Lugo was safe, giving the Braves a 4-3 win and sparking a near riot.

I’ve never seen such a blatantly blown call. Being from Baltimore, I’d have to say that this even tops the Jeffrey Maier incident. Yes, it was THAT bad.
