As we reported this morning, a Disney monorail crash claimed the life of one person early this morning, around 2am EDT.
Disney VP of Communications Michael Griffin has said that the driver that was killed was 21-year-old Austin Wuennenberg. He would not say how long Wuennenberg had been with Disney World or the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“They are extremely rare,” Griffin said of accidents at the park. “The safety of our guests and cast are a top priority above all else.”
It is unclear what caused the crash. Orange County Sheriff’s officials are still investigating what caused the incident.
The crash occurred at the park’s ticket and transportation center. Guards wearing blue Disney security uniforms guarded the monorail station Sunday morning and prevented visitors from approaching the area.
Griffin would not comment on a video posted on the website of Orlando’s WKMG showing several people trying to get the driver’s attention as they examine the wreckage.
