Winter Classic 2012 HighlightsHenrik Lundqvist saved the day to give the New York Rangers a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2012 Winter Classic.

After Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh was called for covering the puck in the crease, Flyers center Danny Briere came barreling down the ice trying to send the game into overtime.

Lundqvist made the stop and saved the day for New York.

Lundqvist stopped 34 shots in total and Brad Richards scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period at Citizens Bank Park.

“I was just trying to be patient and do my thing,” Lundqvist said afterward. “He’s a sneaky guy, and there was a lot of pressure on me.”

Rangers coach John Tortorella jokingly wondered aloud whether or not the officials wanted their own television time to build the suspense.

“They called a penalty shot which I still don’t understand,” he said. “I’m not sure if NBC got together with the refs to turn this into an overtime game. I thought the game was reffed horrible.

“I just thought tonight, in that third period, it was disgusting.”

When it was all said and done, though, New York defeated Philadelphia for the third time this season.
