Billy Idol

Suddenly, Billy Idol looks like the leading candidate to replace Steven Tyler as the frontman for Aerosmith.

The remaining members of the band have stated that they are holding hosting auditions to find a new member while Tyler takes a break.  Guitarist Joe Perry says Steven will not be ready to go on tour until he recovers from his recent stint in rehab and a undergoes a bunch of operations.

Lenny Kravitz was first-rumored to be in the running for filling the shoes, but he has since said that he would never take Tyler's spot.  Other reports have suggested former Queen star Paul Rodgers is a possibility.

Now, Classic Rock magazine has said Idol was slated to meet with the band but had to cancel because he fell ill.

A source says, "Joe said he wanted to talk to Billy about joining Aerosmith, because the band were having problems with Steven. As far as I know Idol did not show up due to having a cold."

Perry recently had this to say about the auditions, "(There are) a few people we've talked to, and we'll see how it goes... As far as auditions go, we'll probably just sit around and have a couple of drinks and see if we get along - because we're already gonna know that they can sing."
