White Sox Announcer Pitcher EjectedThis week’s series between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago White Sox has been chippy at best, and things took a bizarre turn down in St. Peterburg today.

After Chicago catcher A.J. Pierzynski pulled off a rather suspicious slide that led to him getting beaned by Rays pitcher Alex Cobb, White Sox hurler Jose Quintana tried to return the favor against Tampa Bay’s Ben Zobrist.

The pitch went behind Zobrist, though, and umpire Mark Wegner immediately threw him out of the game. Wegner also tossed White Sox manager Robin Ventura.

White Sox announcer Ken “Hawk” Harrelson then went on another of his trademark tirades:

“What are you doing, Wegner? You’ve got to be kidding me. That is so bad, that is absolutely brutal. That is unbelievable. I’ll tell you what, they have got to start making guys be accountable. That is totally absurd. That just tells you he has – here’s an umpire in the American League knows nothing about the game of baseball. That’s unbelievable.”

It sounds a little over-the-top, but Harrelson has a valid point.  These sad excuses for umpires are ruining the once-great game of baseball.  Hopefully, Bud Selig gets his head out of his nether-regions and does something about it, sooner rather than later.
