Last night, there was a tragic end to the regular season in boy’s basketball for a high school team from West Michigan.
Fennville managed to remain undefeated with an overtime win at home over Bridgeman but the Blackhawks’ star player who hit the game’s winning shot, Wes Leonard, collapsed on the court minutes after the game and was pronounced dead at Holland hospital shortly thereafter.
“It’s tough to take in,” said Leonard’s teammate Shane Bale. “It’s like somebody from your family, you know?”
Leonard, 16, was also an all-star honorable mention quarterback on the Fennville football team.
“Obviously, in the midst of celebration, I think shocking is exactly the word,” said Fennville Superintendent Dirk Weeldreyer.
There’s no word yet on the official cause of death.
UPDATE: It’s been revealed that Leonard died of complications stemming from an enlarged heart.
