audi green police commercial

While it didn’t make our list of top 10 Super Bowl commercials, the Audi “Green Police” commercial is raising a few eyebrows.

In the ad, every-day citizens are arrested for using plastic instead of paper, tossing out batteries, not recycling orange rinds, using incandescent light bulbs, and setting their hot tub thermostats too high. All the while, Robin Zander sings reworked lyrics to Cheap Trick‘s “The Dream Police.”

The driver of an Audi A3 TDI with clean-diesel technology, however, gets away scot-free.

Is the commercial clever, though, or just insulting? Bob Ellis with DakotaVoice.com thinks it’s the latter:

“I’m sure some idiot at Audi thought these ‘Green Police’ commercials for the Super Bowl would be funny. I found them downright offensive and not the least bit funny.”

The New York Times would seem to agree with him:

“This misguided spot put the ‘mental’ in ‘environmental.’”

So take a look and decide for yourself. Do you think this commercial goes too far?  Some would say there is no such thing as bad press, and that any publicity is good publicity.  Do you agree?
