Microsoft has surprised us all by making its new Bing search engine available a little early. No need to wait until June 3, just head on over and go Bing yourself now.
Initially, the Bing engine looks appealing and is very easy-to-use. In fact, the graphics alone are quite impressive.
It looks like we will be treated to a new homepage graphic every day, and you can currently scroll through all the graphics that have been featured on the homepage throughout the past week...
There are also certain parts of the homepage that are clickable, in an Easter Egg sort of way. Once you click on these, interesting factoids pop up about the area in question. Quite a nice distraction, actually.
The search results appear to be fairly focused, including a new "side-pop" feature that brings you additional information when you hover to the right of one of the search results...
One noticeable shortcoming is that finding the "News" tab for your search results requires an extra step as it is not on the initial top page of results. You must click on "More" in order to get there.
Also, there doesn't seem to be a"Blogs" choice at all, a feature that I have grown to like when using Google as this is about as close to "real time" as Google gets.
One interesting feature is that video results listed will auto-play when you hover over them.
That's where things get interesting.
Obviously, if you are searching for anything "off-color", like, I don't know, say, p-o-r-n, the results could be extremely dangerous.
As TechCrunch points out, "if you’re a teenager looking for a way around porn filters on your computer" this could be the Holy Grail.
Granted, you cannot SEE these results unless you turn off the safety filter, but that's easy enough to do.
As you can imagine, if you are at work and don't have the filter on, an errant search result combined with a slip of the mouse could make for some interesting background noise at the office...so be careful!
Overall, though, I like Bing so far. This could be a big win for Microsoft. I doubt that they will take much search share away from Google, as that engine is about as good as it gets, but they may end up yanking some market share away from Yahoo and Ask.
We give Bing 4 B's out of 5.
What say you?
