Warning: Evenflo High Chair Recall 2009

If you’ve got little ones, like I do, you’ll want to pay attention. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced an Evenflo High Chair Recall today.

The Evenflo Co. issued a voluntary recall of 643,000 Envision high chairs and has also expanded an earlier recall of 90,000 Majestic model high chairs.

Both of these high chairs have been recalled due to a higher-than-usual risk of falling and / or choking.

Parents should stop using the recalled high chairs right away.

Evenflo High Chair Recall Details

If you have the Envision chair, the risk is that fasteners and metal screws on both sides of the high chair are at risk of loosening and falling out. This allows the back of the seat to come apart or recline unexpectedly.

Children could fall backwards or completely out of the chair. If the hardware become detached, children could also choke on it.

So far, Evenflo has gotten about 320 reports of Envision seatbacks coming apart or reclining unexpectedly. The result? Nineteen reports (so far) of bumps and bruises to the head and about 35 instances of various other injuries. These particular Envision models were sold in stores from December, 2002 through April, 2006.

The Evenflo High Chair Recall involves all Envision high chairs, including model numbers: 2891321, 2891321A, 2891333, 2891351, 2891351A, 2891365, 2891375, 2891403, 2891403A, 2891466, 2891466A, 2891478, 2891536, 2891536A, 2891573, 2891586, 2892351 and 2892351A. You can find the model number on a white label on the back of the seat.

In the expanded recall of the Majestic line, plastic caps and metal screws on both sides of the high chair can loosen and fall out, allowing the seatback to suddenly fall back or detach from the high chair, causing children to fall backwards out of the high chair.

Evenflo has received 16 reports of Majestic seatbacks reclining, falling back and/or detaching unexpectedly, resulting in five reports of bumps and bruises to the head and five reports of other injuries including bruises and abrasions.

With regard to the expanded recall of the Evenflo Majestic chairs, watch out for model numbers: 3001395, 3001395A, 3001604, 3001700, 3001713, 3001713A, 3001730A, 3001732, 3001733, 3001742, 3001742A, 3001756, 3001821A, 3001840A, 3001845, 30011848, 3001852, 3001932, 3002719 and 3003845 made between Jan. 23, 2007 and Dec. 31, 2008.
