F My Life: It's Funny, It's True, Except When It Happens to You

Walter Cronkite, renowned television anchorman and often referred to as "the most trusted man in America," has died at the age of 92. Marlene Adler, Cronkite's longtime chief of staff, confirmed that Cronkite passed away at 7:42pm on Friday at his Manhattan home with his family at his side. The cause of death was cerebral vascular disease.

Adler simply said, "I have to go now" before beginning to sob. She had no further comment.

Cronkite had the anchorman role on the "CBS Evening News" from 1962 to 1981, covering such famous events as assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and the Reverend Martin Luther King, Watergate and the Iran hostage crisis.

"He was a great broadcaster and a gentleman whose experience, honesty, professionalism and style defined the role of anchor and commentator," said CBS chief exec Leslie Moonves.

CBS will air a prime-time special called "That's the Way it Was: Remembering Walter Cronkite" at 7pm on Sunday.
