The world’s very first symphony orchestra made up of close to 100 members who tried out solely online played their debut gig at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday night.
The YouTube Symphony Orchestra blew away the crowd at Carnegie Hall, and may have ushered in a new era in interactive musical performance.
“We hope this is game changing in the sense it redefines audition space, it brings people closer together and lets them collaborate, transcending geographical and linguistic boundaries,” said marketing manager Ed Sanders.
Composer Tan Dun wrote a piece specifically for the orchestra called “Internet Symphony No. 1, Eroica.” Dun stated that his inspiration for this composition came from the streets of cities across the globe.
“On the streets of New York, London, Paris, Beijing, Shanghai, I heard the street noise…then I thought this is the spirit beyond, this is the spirit of today.”
Dun also wrote music for the movie “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” and the Summer Olympics in Beijing.
