F My Life: It's Funny, It's True, Except When It Happens to You
As you sit there reading this, it may interest you to know that yesterday was almost your last day on Earth.
A massive, surprise asteroid came within just 46,000 miles smashing into Earth. That's a ridiculously close call in astronomical terms. That distance is less than one fifth of the distance from here to the moon.
Just over 100 years ago, an asteroid of similar size flattened over 1,000 square miles of forest, an area much larger than Greater London.
What's really comforting is that this massive asteroid, called 2008/9 DD45, was only just discovered on Saturday. That was much too late to do anything about the pending planet-killer.
Luckily, it was wide left. Now, we'll have to wait until 2012 for the end of the world.
