Could there soon be a Verizon iPhone? USA Today seems to think so.
In fact, they say that there are currently “high-level” discussions taking place right now and that the goal is to have a CDMA-compatible Verizon iPhone ready to launch by next year.
AT&T‘s exclusive contract with Apple does expire next year, so the time could be right for this to actually happen.
Apple COO Tim Cook seems to refute the rumors, however. During Apple’s quarterly earnings call, he said that they are “very happy” with their AT&T relationship and they currently have no immediate plans to change that.
He also didn’t seem too keen on making a CDMA-capable iPhone.
“From a technology point of view, Verizon is on CDMA, and we chose from the beginning of the iPhone to focus on one phone for the whole world,” Cook said. “When you do that, you really go down the GSM route because CDMA really doesn’t have a life to it after a certain point in time.”
Can you hear me now? I guess we’ll know next year.
