Eric Bruntlett didn’t quite realize what had happened. Indeed, he had just ended a game with a rare unassisted triple play.
Bruntlett is now just the second player in MLB history to end a game with such a unique play, preserving the Philadelphia Phillies’ 9-7 win over the New York Mets.
“I didn’t know how to react. I didn’t know what to do,” Bruntlett said. “The ninth inning was wild. The whole game it seemed was strange.”
It was a wild end to a wild game, which also saw another rare play…an inside-the-park home run after the ball got stuck under the wall in the outfield.
Bruntlett managed to score just the 15th unassisted triple play in major league history, and only the second to end a game. Johnny Neun of the Detroit Tigers also managed the rare feat on May 31, 1927, completing a 1-0 won vs. Cleveland.
It was the first unassisted triple play since Cleveland Indians second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera pulled one off in the 5th inning on May 12, 2008, against the Toronto Blue Jays.
