Perhaps Twitter is getting tired of the lawsuits. Perhaps they realized it was time to make the site more secure.
Whatever the motivation, Twitter has just announced a “verified accounts beta” program.
Basically, there will be a special seal on any account that Twitter verifies as as authentic account. This seal will appear at the top of verified profile pages. Obviously, this system is aimed at public officials, athletes, and other high-profile individuals.
Twitter will check to see if an official channel of the person or entity in question links to his or her Twitter account from their official website, for example. If it does, Twitter will consider the profile to be “verified.”
Not a bad idea, actually. It will be interesting to see what else Twitter rolls out to protect its users.
