It seems that maybe the folks at Twitter are starting to grasp this whole ‘monetization’ thing.
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone has confirmed that the service will start to charge companies for certain facets of its service.
Rumors that the micro-blogging site might start charging for use began taking concrete form last November.
“We are noticing more companies using Twitter and individuals following them. We can identify ways to make this experience even more valuable and charge for commercial accounts,” Stone said.
The type of services for which companies would be charged have not yet been discussed. Sites like Yammer already charge corporations a subscription fee, but implementing a similar system now would not likely be welcomed by current Twitter clients accustomed to using the site for free.
Several companies are using Twitter for customer service, including Comcast, Starbucks, and Amazon, just to name a few. Some companies, like Zappos and GoDaddy, have employees checking the site to monitor their brands’ reputation.
