Police in Mexico have taken a group of family members into custody after a deranged mother allegedly ripped out her five-year-old son’s eyes during a satanic ritual.
The violent ritual took place early Thursday morning at a house in the city of Nezahualcóyotl, located near the capital of Mexico City. Neighbors reported hearing screams emanating from the building while the family carried out the atrocious act.
“What we think – it’s a hypothesis – is that it was a satanic ritual. They speak of a religious ceremony,” Mayra Perez said.
The state’s Citizen Security Ministry chief Salvador Neme confirmed the horrific incident, stating that officer who responded to the scene found a number of family members at the residence when they entered. The relatives allegedly said they were going to kill the boy to “cast the demon out” and “avoid an earthquake to save this earthly world.”
Officers also observed family members praying in an unidentified language.
Authorities believe Maria del Carmen Rios Garcia, the 28-year-old mother of the child, ripped out the child’s eyeballs after he refused to shut them during the ceremony. The boy’s aunt allegedly held down the boy while the mother removed his eyes with a spoon.
The boy, identified as Fernando, was immediately airlifted to the Red Cross Pediatric Hospital in Mexico City’s Polanco area. He was later transported to the Children’s Hospital in Tacubaya, also in Mexico City, where he was reported in a stable but serious condition.
According to the boy’s uncle, Jesus Rios, several of the people at the ceremony, which lasted for several days, were under the influence of “some drug or in shock,” a condition that prevented them from helping the boy.
Neme said that eight people had been arrested in connection to the brutal act, including the boy’s mother, aunt, and his grandparents.
One of the men arrested had sought help from police who were patrolling the area, saying a boy had been hurt at a house.
The father of the child was not in the home at the time of bizarre incident and reportedly did not know about the ceremony.
