Trayvon Martin Road SignMichigan authorities are launching an investigation after an electronic construction sign was hacked and displayed a racial slur about Trayvon Martin.

Michigan State Police say someone hacked the road sign along I-94 around 1 a.m. on Monday and posted “TRAYVON A N–GER”.

The unarmed teen was shot to death by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman at a gated community in Sanford, Florida on February 26. Zimmerman has claimed self-defense, telling police that Trayvon Martin attacked him.

Motorists who saw the sign heading into Dearborn, Michigan pulled over and reported the sign to authorities.

“I feel violated by it,” Elaine Bonner told WDIV-TV.

Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Rob Morosi said someone hacked into the sign’s operating system and put up the racial slur.

The message was removed before the Monday morning commute.

Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Transportation are investigating and have turned to the public for help in finding those responsible.

“Whoever it is needs to be found. They changed the message, now find the messenger,” the Rev. Wendell Anthony, Detroit NAACP president, told WDIV-TV.
