Transgender Remembrance Day? Google Really IS Diverse

I'm a pretty open-minded person, but Google really threw me for a loop this afternoon when I saw a post on the Google blog entitled, "Transgender Rememberance Day".

The blog post starts out like this...

"The post below kicks off an occasional series, entitled Interface, about valuing people's similarities and differences in the workplace...

November 20th marks Transgender Remembrance Day, which takes on a special significance in a world awakening to the need for unity among all people. In observing this day, the Gayglers — the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) group within Google — extend their wholehearted support to the LGBT community at large, as we reflect on the senseless violence perpetrated against transgender people around the world."

OK, wait a minute..."Gayglers"? I know Google wants to be diverse, but come on now.

I don't mean to make light of what is certainly a very serious issue. Anyone who commits violence against another person because of their skin color, because of their race, or because of their sexual preference should be dealt with in the most severe manner.

Still, maybe I've lived a sheltered life, but this is stretching things a bit, don't you think?

Transgender Remembrance Day. I didn't even know that there was such a thing.

If someone is unable to accept the body they've been born in there seems to be a big mental problem in between. By all means let's be open minded, but this is too much.

For someone to work in an office (or to interact with the public) he must show mental stability, and sorry, this won't be the case if you're trasgender. It won't be the case either if you're dressed like a lion, a giraffe or a washing machine.

Can we all start trying to be tolerant WITHOUT turning completely stupid?

Isn't there anyone else besides me with the BALLS to write this?

Thanks for commenting. My reaction pales in comparison because I've edited my original post quite a bit since I realized it was likely offensive to many. I should also clarify that, when I said, "I was floored to know that there even was such a thing" in my previous comment, I was referring to the "Day", not to transgenders in general.

Now, it's my turn. I DO have a red-headed step-child...so, careful! :-)

Chris: My name is Bobbie (duh!) I am an attorney for the State of Montana. I am also transgender. You have likely heard so little about this issue because, frankly the news items that appear almost weekly around the country do not interest you. We comprise such a small portion of the overall population. Estimates are between one and three percent. Nobody knows for sure because these figures are tabulated on those who are finally able to have gender reassignment surgery. They are "out" so to speak. Transpersons, generally, are very fearful about this proposition because of the reaction, and yours pales in comparison - thank you for the sensitivity you did show. They also have a very real fear for their physical safety, depending on how they "present" in terms of their level of transition. Some transwomen are very fortunate and avoid these fears because they pass easily and completely. There is a very good chance that you work, socilaize, vote, worship, pay taxes, go to PTA meetings, etc. with or very close to a transwoman or man. many people do no know or understand about us because they just don't see us. Others do not want to know or understand.

We are sort of the red headed stepchild of the LGBT movement, but, as hearts and minds begin to open and change we too find acceptance and a place in this world as should be for all persons, no matter their stripe. Change is coming. Check out Obama's diversity policy. So, you now you know - k. And, thanks for listening. HAGD, Bobbie

Hi, strawberry. Thanks for commenting. I admit to being ignorant about these things. When I first saw the headline on the Google blog, I was floored to know that there even was such a thing. I did state in the post that I am quite against anyone who commits such a heinous act of violence. I was just trying to lighten the mood a bit. Sorry if I took it too far.

"Happy Tranny Day!" is an INCREDIBLY offensive headline for a post about this.

Firstly, the majority of trans people find the word "tranny" to be incredibly offensive on it's own. But more importantly, Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day where people from the trans community are mourning and remembering the countless people who were murdered just because they were different. So "Happy"? No. Just no.
