The third stage of the Tour de France saw strong crosswinds that allowed a huge breakaway to split the field wide open. This benefited Lance Armstrong greatly.
Team Columbia orchestrated a huge 28-man breakaway which shook up the 2009 Tour de France, keeping Fabian Cancellara of Team Saxo Bank in the yellow jersey in the lead, Tony Martin of Columbia second at 33 seconds behind, but boosting Lance Armstrong from tenth to third place.
The riders who lost the most for the day include last year’s first and second place finishers, Carlos Sastre and Cadel Evans, plus Levi Leipheimer and former winner Alberto Contador.
The 196 km stage 3 began today in Marseille and finished in the resort town of La Grande-Motte.
