Today, Topps in conjunction with Total Immersion are launching new baseball cards that show a 3-D image on a computer when held in front of a webcam.
The technology is part of Total Immersion’s “augmented reality,” which they introduced at the DEMO conference back in 2007.
This new technology will merge baseball cards in the real world with Topps 3D Live virtual community.
There are thirty-three 3-D cards right now. The cards come with codes in every pack.
Fans can then log on to the Topps website, choose the player code on the card, and then hold the card underneath of a webcam. The player on the card will then “pop” up on-screen. Rotating the card controls the player’s actions in an on-screen game.
Topps is owned by Michael Eisner’s Torante Company. He has said that the goal with these cards is to transform Topps into a sports media company.
