How To Choose The Best Wine Fridge For Your Home Or Office

In this short buyers guide I'll list the categories that you need to consider before purchasing any wine storage appliance. Things you need to think about include:

Your storage and capacity needs

Storage and capacity simply refers to the number of bottles you'll need to store. Obviously this number will be different for everyone, but when looking at your typical collection, you should make sure that the wine chiller you select is larger then your current inventory to accommodate growth. Over the years you may want to increase your collection and a unit with more capacity will allow you to do that. A good number to go by is to double the capacity of what you typically require. If your current collection is 50 bottles I would look for a wine cooler with the capacity to hold 100 bottles - or relatively close to that. I certainly would not go below 75 in that example.

Look at temperature settings and stability

A quality unit will remain stable at specific temperatures. Most wines that require refrigeration will deteriorate in quality unless a narrow temperature range can be maintained consistently. Perfect temperature ranges will vary from wine to wine. However, you can generally assume that most white wines, red table wines, and sparkling wines should be kept at 42 to 60 degrees F. Wide temperature swings will certainly compromise the flavor of these wines and should be avoided.

If you select a wine cooler with one compartment then you'll have to rely on colder air settling at the bottom of the fridge in order to define temperature zones. Of course everything is relevant to the price you pay, but having the ability to control temperatures in separated, individual sections is certainly preferable. Most of the units today have this feature allowing you to store different bottles at different temperatures within the same cooler.

Inspect the shelving before buying

Make sure the shelving configuration is what you want. There are several different styles and types of shelving depending on the wine cooling unit you pick. Most of the standard electric designs use coated wire racks as the main style of shelving. In most models they can be lifted out of the unit's compartment to accommodate larger bottles.

This is a nice feature if larger, say 750ML bottles are a part of your current inventory because you make more room or change the configuration as needed. Wood shelving can be attractive and quite sturdy but generally are not removable and are limited to the changes that can be made. The bottom line with shelving is that it needs to work for you and your collection. You need to be comfortable with the style and lay-out so that it fits your personal wine storage requirements.

Other Considerations

There are a number of other questions and features that should be a part of your decision making while shopping for your new wine cooler. Although some of these may be less important then the three categories above, they're still important to consider and so I've listed them below with brief descriptions for each...

  • Is it noisy?                                                                                                                                                                                   If the wine cooler is going to be near areas that need to be quiet then a noisy motor could pose a problem. Noise levels will vary from model to model. Vibration levels in most units were very low. However, according to consumer reports, the louder the unit the greater the vibration which could affect the molecular density of the wine.
  • External mount temperature controls
Wine refrigerators, for the most part, are not very energy efficient. Further, the opening and closing of the cabinet doors to simply adjust the thermostat or lighting can hurt temperature stability while using more energy at the same time. Most models are now offering digital controls with an exterior mount.
  • Integrated locking system
If you have kids or you worry about some of your guests and integrated locking mechanism should be a part of the cabinet you select. for security and piece of mind it's a nice feature that is readily available on most models.
  • Water bins
For long term storage specific humidity settings are necessary to preserve labels and to stop corks from drying out. Some models have water collection bins to collect the condensation.
  • Locate the refrigerator lighting
Display lighting is available with some wine coolers as a way of showcasing your collection. If you plan on making your wine refrigerator a focal point then display lighting will certainly highlight it in any room of the house.

If you have a collection of wines right now, or would like to become a wine aficionado, it might be a good time to consider purchasing the best wine cooler for your collection of vintage wines.
