At least one person is doing something productive with his time, in the wake of the recent job market chaos.
Chris Hutchins, a former management and business strategy consultant who was laid off in early December, is looking to make the most of a generally nasty economy.
Realizing that he’s just one of thousands being laid off (more than 224,000 tech employees since August – to be exact), Hutchins decided to launch LaidOffCamp San Francisco, a “bar camp” style event that he hopes will be an invaluable networking resource, start-up incubator, and group healing session for the recently axed in the Bay Area.
Hutchins, who is 24, said that yesterday’s wave of layoffs was his motivation for building a community for the unemployed and to “create resources for people who need to figure out what to do with their lives after being laid off.”
Hutchins would also like to sponsor career fairs for participants, but remains “cautiously optimistic” about finding employers who are actually hiring. Good luck with that one, Chris.
LaidOffCamp takes place at an unnamed venue in San Francisco on Tuesday, March 3 at 10 a.m.
