The iron-fisted Chinese government is understandably not a big fan of Web 3.0. Still, in an unbelievable move today, Chinese officials have shut down Twitter, Flickr, Bing, Hotmail.com, Blogger, YouTube and a host of other sites.
Free speech is merely a figment of the imagination in China and the blocking of these services is another instance of this. One can’t help but wonder what toll this will take on the users there. More than one-third of the world’s population lives in China and they represent a major growth area for the internet.
The shut-down is undoubtedly related to the date. The Tiananmen Square Massacre occurred on June 4th. Any significant date like this usually leads to a tightening of the iron fist.
