Description

Firefighter Patrick Sullivan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) finds his life turned upside-down when his fiancée suddenly calls off their pending nuptials per the recommendation of radio love guru Dr. Emma Lloyd (Uma Thurman). Determined to get back at this "love doctor," Sullivan forges a fake marriage license, "accidentally" marrying him to Emma, who's already engaged to Richard (Colin Firth). But as Patrick's charms begin to wear Emma down, she must decide which of these bachelors is her "Mr. Right." Also starring Sam Shepard, Justina Machado and Isabella Rossellini in this romantic comedy that proves even the experts need to learn a few love lessons now and then.

Doctor, heal thyself! That's the wry message underscoring the charming romantic comedy The Accidental Husband, which features Uma Thurman as Emma, a radio "love doctor" who can't quite seem to manage her own love life off the air. The cast is splendid, led by Thurman, who has rarely gotten to show her comic chops, and who really is very funny and has a gift for physical comedy as well. The two bachelors whose lives are accidentally (on purpose?) entangled with hers are played by two dreamboats, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (rugged firefighter Patrick) and Colin Firth (her fiancé, Richard). The chemistry between Emma and both suitors is crackling and captured well on film by director Griffin Dunne. Thurman, Morgan, and Firth are joined by a supporting cast every bit as spot-on as they are: Sam Shepard, Brooke Adams, Isabella Rossellini, Sarita Choudhury, and Keir Dullea, each of whom brings his or her own quirks and charms. The Accidental Husband is very much in the mode of Four Weddings and a Funeral and the Bridget Jones films--which is to say, make a date with it for your next date night. --A.T. Hurley

Reviews

What a waste of time and energy this film is for Colin Firth. He is an incredibly talented and intelligent actor and I fail to understand why he would stoop this low to have agreed to act in this immensely stupid film? Uma Thurman not only can't do comedy, she needs to quit acting altogether. This woman can't act and it shows. The best part of the whole film is the Bollywood dancing segment which does not fit into the whole scheme of the film by the way. I had to fast forward my way through the movie because it was painful to watch. Please save your money and don't even rent it. Just forget it was ever made.

This review is the first I've ever written for Amazon.com. I don't usually write them but feel compelled as this movie was one of the worst romantic comedies I've ever seen. Truth be told, my husband and I only watched one third of it and then turned it off as it was that bad. I am a woman in my early 40s and typically love romantic comedies, even ones that only get three stars. I can't believe this movie currently has three stars! Uma Thurman is terrible in this role. She is completely miscast and ruins what might have been a decent movie. My husband and I could not get past her horrible performance. Do not rent this movie!

Uma Therman's character, a talk radio shrink, develops a theory about relationships called REAL love, in which she advises against romantic flings. Predictably, she ends up disavowing it by the end. That's the problem with The Accidental Husband: it's an utterly predictable romantic comedy. With such good actors, I kept waiting - hoping - for some spark. It has some moments - particularly the Indian party - and it is better than other recent films in this genre (particularly The Ugly Truth). However, at the end of the day, The Accidental Husband really is a case of seen one, seen em all.

When even the considerable charm of Colin Firth can't save a movie, it's clearly a project that should have been dropped in development. The script is leaden - every plot turn is so predictable that even a five-year-old child could have come up with something more inspired. The dialog makes the word flat seem exciting in comparison. In short this is neither romantic nor a comedy. It is a damp squib of the most tedious kind. Rather than spend two hours wasting your life in front of this drab and desperately unfunny film, it would be better to go out and do almost anything else. Even watching dead snails race would be better than seeing this movie. It simply has no redeeming feature whatsoever, aside from the fact that it eventually ends.

What a great cast but what a horrible script they had to work with. I love chick flicks, but this was painful to watch. Jeffrey Dean Morgan was lovable, but Uma's character was annoying and she overacted the part. It wasn't that it was a predictable and simple story line, the movie was bad because it was annoying, too many stupid scenes, and too much overacting.
