Amber Portwood Gary Shirley Attack

Don’t look now, but Teen Mom‘s Amber Portwood, 20, has been charged with three class D felonies in the state of Indiana for physically assaulting Gary Shirley, the father of her child, during a segment of the reality show.

The Madison County Prosecutor’s office has formally charged Portwood with two counts of domestic battery and one count of neglect of a dependent, in addition to one misdemeanor charge of domestic battery.

Just last month, MTV issued the following statement regarding Portwood’s legal woes:

“We are cooperating with all parties and hope for a quick and fair resolution that allows everyone involved to move forward in a positive manner.”

But did MTV encourage the assault? That’s an argument Portwood apparently plans to use in her defense.

She insists the violence was all a ruse and that show execs gave her an extra $1,000 to “get physical” with her ex during filming because they “wanted more drama.”

“Amber knows she needs a good defense, and reality show producers are known to stage scenes, so she thinks it’s believable,” says one source close to the situation.

“She says that the producers were concerned because they don’t get much drama from the other moms. They told her she and Gary were the most popular couple on the show and that they would pay her extra to provoke a fight.”

“Amber says Gary didn’t know about it because they wanted a ‘spontaneous’ reaction from him.” Looks like they got it.

Portwood and Shirley’s daughter, Leah, was technically placed into the custody of the state at the end of last month as a result of the televised altercation between the two parents, but she is still currently in the custody of her father pending a hearing.

Portwood faces five years in jail and $10,000 in fines if convicted on the charges.
