Tarek MehannaMassachusetts police on Wednesday charged Tarek Mehanna, 27, for allegedly planning to attack allied forces in Iraq and execute random shootings at shopping malls around the country.

Mehanna, of Boston, tried to contact gang members so that he could obtain automatic weapons.

Michael K. Loucks, Acting US Attorney, says that Mehanna’s partners planned to block exits to the shopping centers while he took randoms shots at shoppers.  He then wanted to wait and open fire on medical staff and police when they arrived on the scene.

According to Louks:

“Mehanna and the co-conspirators had multiple conversations about obtaining automatic weapons and randomly shooting people in a shopping mall, and that the conversations went so far as to discuss the logistics of a mall attack, including co – ordination, weapons needed and the possibility of attacking emergency responders.”

When the conspirators learned that they could only get handguns, they gave up, he alleged.

Mehanna is also accused to of going to the Middle East for terrorist training and watching and distributing jihadist videos.
