Swine Flu Hits Middle East, Asia Pacific

The Swine Flu outbreak crossed new borders Tuesday as confirmed cases appeared in the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region. In Mexico, the number of deaths blamed on the virulent strain passed 150.

"At this time, containment is not a feasible option," said Keiji Fukuda, assistant director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), which raised its alert level on Monday.

With the virus spreading, the United States is preparing for the worst.

At the White House, Obama has added a swine flu update to his daily briefing. Obama says that the outbreak is "not cause for alarm," even as the U.S. begins increasing checks of people entering the country and has now warned U.S. citizens to avoid going into Mexico.

"We are proceeding as if we are preparatory to a full pandemic," said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Three soccer games involving Mexico City teams were played without any spectators over the weekend. Decio de Maria, secretary general of the Mexican soccer federation, said plans for future matches would be announced on Wednesday.

"The idea is to look for the fewest number of games that have to be played behind closed doors," he said. "If it's necessary, we'll play all the matches behind closed doors. We don't foresee canceling any games."

Even Amazon has begun offering a Swine Flu Safety Kit that sells for $25.
