Tonight, we will see the launch of Super Chirp, a new service from 83 Degrees that will allow Twitter users to be paid for their premium updates.
Super Chirp works via Twitter direct messaging, meaning that you can use your existing Twitter account to promote your premium stream. A buyer would subscribe to the content on Super Chirp, make payment using Paypal, and then get the premium tweets via direct message (not in the main Twitter stream). A buyer can also see all of the paid messages on the Super Chirp website.
This is a natural product for celebrities to embrace. But it’s also interesting for charities - loyal supporters can donate to the charity and get a stream of news relevant to that charity, or whatever. Some news outlets may try to charge for streams as well. I could imagine that at least some of our followers on our main Twitter account would pay to get additional information if it had enough value.
The publisher has the ability to set the price for their content...ranging anywhere from $0.99 and $9.99 per month. Super Chirp will then keep 30 percent of the earnings.
This should be an interesting idea, particularly for celebrities and big news outlets perhaps.
