The Sun-Maid Raisin Girl is all grown up.
The company has joined the ranks of Betty Crocker and Aunt Jemima and in updating its animated spokesperson with a more modern look.
The Sun-Maid Raising Girl not only has a more modern face, but she now sports a fuller bust as well. This is her first major update since 1970. Some critics are saying that the new Raisin Girl as “a little too sexy,” and “a Barbie Doll in Amish attire.”
Sun-Maid says the girl is still based on California’s Lorraine Collett Petersen, a young girl who was painted with a basketful of grapes in 1915. Her picture has been the basis of the Sun-Maid Raisin Girl for over 90 years. According to the company website, she was discovered while drying her jet-black hair in her parents’ backyard. The portrait was first applied to packages of Sun-Maid raisins in 1916.
