I Bring It Via Satellite

The “Texas Rattlesnake”, the one and only Stone Cold Steve Austin returned to WWE Monday Night RAW last night and made an immediate impact.

Michael Cole had taken to the ring and convinced everyone that he was going to name a crowd favorite and fellow Texan as special guest referee for his WrestleMania XXVII match against Jerry Lawler at WrestleMania.  He even got the crowd to start chanting Austin’s name, only to pull a swerve and announce that JBL would be the referee and all he had to do was sign the contract.

Before he could do so, however, Stone Cold came out and interrupted the proceedings.  Austin wound up hitting JBL with a stunner and pouring beer all over him.  Austin then realized that no one had actually signed the contract yet, so he picked up and did so, thereby making himself the guest referee at WrestleMania 27.

Cole was beside himself at this development and did a good job of pleading with Austin to change his mind.  No such luck, however.

In fact, as JBL got back to his feet Austin handed him a beer.  JBL hesitated and then reluctantly agreed to drink a beer with Austin, only to be on the receiving end of yet another Stunner.  Austin also dumped beer all over Cole, who then had to go shower and change his clothes.

The PG era definitely seems to be on its way out as Austin gave the crowd the old, number one salute.  The camera caught one of them as it happened.

The other big moment on last night’s show was when John Cena came out to issue a “final response” to The Rock, who last week criticized Cena for “rapping” at him.  Cena said he wouldn’t make that mistake again and that tonight he would do hip hop instead.

Again, PG seems to have become PG-13 as Cena threw in a pearl necklace reference.  He also did a good job of jabbing at The Rock for basically phoning in his response last week by showing off his new Rock t-shirt that read, “I Bring It…via Satellite”.

All bets were off, however, when The Miz, upset with how little respect he’s getting from both Cena and The Rock (he IS the WWE champion, after all), took Cena out.

He then stole the show and The Rock’s “know your role” line, eventually hitting the People’s Elbow on Cena.  I thought this was a spectacular promo for The Miz and it really put him over as a top heel.   Too bad Miz looks like he’s 12 years old whenever he tries to be vicious.

Also last night, The Nexus ganged up on Randy Orton in an attempt to beat him down before his match with David Otunga.   Every time Orton beats a member of The Nexus, that member can no longer be at ringside for Orton’s WrestleMania match against Nexus leader C.M. Punk.

Following last night’s Orton beat-down, Otunga seemed to have the upper hand, only for Orton to battle back and deliver an RKO out of nowhere for the win.  Yet another Nexus member has been eliminated from ringside.

On last night’s show, Undertaker also announced that his match against Triple H would be “no holds barred”.  We also got a peek at Brodus Clay, who took on Christian and looked somewhat impressive in defeat.

“Twin Magic” didn’t work for the Bella Twins last night as the ref caught the old switcheroo in progress and Nikki Bella lost to Eve Torres.

Sheamus has been on a bit of a losing streak lately, and he says he’ll quit next week if he can’t beat Daniel Bryan for the United States Championship.  One can only hope.

Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero came out last night as it was announced that Ziggler had been picked up by the RAW brand.  One catch, though, as the anonymous General Manager pointed out that RAW had NOT agreed to pick up Vickie’s contract, just Dolph’s.  In order for Vickie to have a spot on the show, she’ll have to defeat the returning Trish Stratus next week!

Other thoughts on last night’s show…R-Truth vs. C.M. Punk was predictable.  What’s up?  My blood pressure after I saw that WWE is going to do a Jersey Shore gimmick of their own next week, bringing Snooki onto the show in St. Louis.  I thought TNA had cornered the market on poor marketing ideas.

I also liked how Cole interrupted the Divas’ match because he was too impatient to wait to make his referee announcement.  He seems to grow more and more comfortable with his heel persona every week.

It should be interesting to see how The Rock responds to The Miz’s actions next week.  Check out some video footage from last night below.
