Canadian researchers have concluded that a gigantic spying operation has compromised computers and has swiped documents from hundreds of private and government locations worldwide, even those of the Dalai Lama.
In a report likely to be released at some time this weekend, the researchers said that the system was being run mainly by computers in China, but that still can’t say one way or the other whether or not the Chinese government is involved.
The group, based out of the Munk Center for International Studies at the University of Toronto, has been asked by the offices of the Dalai Lama himself to check its PCs for malicious software.
The investigation revealed a much larger network that has infiltrated at least 1,295 computers in 103 countries, including several belonging to foreign ministries and other government offices.
The insidious system, which has been dubbed “GhostNet,” was focused primarily on South Asian governments.
This is likely the first time researchers have been able to pinpoint the work of a computer system used in an intrusion of this magnitude.
