spain wins world cup

Spain has done it!

After an exhausting 1-0 win in extra time over the Netherlands on Sunday, Spain has won the World Cup.  Just two years after winning the European title, the Spanish soccer team topped even themselves.

It certainly wasn’t the cleanest final ever played, as a finals-record 13 yellow cards were doled out.  The Dutch even finished out the match with just 10 players.

The game-winning play occurred when Andres Iniesta broke free in the penalty area, taking a pass from Cesc Fabregas and putting a shot from 8 yards just beyond the reach of Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

GOOOOOOAAAAAALLLL!!!!!!!

The Dutch, by the way, have now failed in the final for the third time.

This also means that Paul the Octopus finished with a perfect record.  Maybe we can convince him to pick some lottery numbers next.
