When Army Sergeant Nick B spotted a horrible instance of cruelty in Afghanistan, he knew he had to do something.
Nick stumbled upon a tied-up, skinny Shepherd mix covered in mud, with its ears and tail hacked away.
The soldier asked the people living nearby if he could have the dog – but the owners, who were planning to use the dog for gruesome “entertainment” purposes, would only give him up in exchange for cigarettes.
Nick happily agreed to the trade.
The solider then won the dog’s trust by approaching him gently and offering him some bits of beef jerky.
“When he realized I was a good guy who was going to save…(him), he wouldn’t leave my side,” Nick said.
Bodhi, as he’s now been named, eventually won the hearts of Nick’s entire unit.
With the help of an organization called Puppy Rescue Mission, Nick was able to ensure that Bodhi would be transported through Taliban-controlled areas and out of the country until his tour was finished.
On Saturday, the two had an emotional reunion in Pensacola, Florida.
“He’s going to have a great life with us,” Nick said.
