skipper beckWilliam “Skipper” Beck, a 49-year-old businessman who assisted in bringing an expansion basketball team to Charlotte and who held a minority share in the NBA’s Bobcats franchise, was killed in a plane crash on Friday morning.

“Skipper loved basketball and was instrumental in bringing the Bobcats to Charlotte, and as an owner, he was without question the Bobcats greatest fan,” said Bobcats majority owner Robert Johnson in a prepared statement. “We will miss him at courtside.”

Skipper Beck was flying a single-engine Cirrus SR22 plane from New Jersey to South Carolina went the airplane crashed. There were no other passengers in the plane.

Skipper Beck was also friends with Bobcats co-owner and Hall of Fame inductee Michael Jordan. Back in 2007, Beck arranged a threesome at the Wachovia pro-am matching himself, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods (pictured at right).
