silly bandz

Think those Silly Bandz bracelets that all the kids are wearing are cute?  Better not let your kid wear them to school…or they might be sent home.

Schools in many states, including New York, Texas, North Carolina, and Florida, have now banned the bracelets.  Silly Bandz are elastic, colorful rubber-band bracelets that maintain their shape when you take them off; they’re usually shaped like fantasy figures or animals.  They sell for about $5 for a pack of 24 bracelets. You can check them out here.

Why the all the fuss?

It seems that students play with them in class and try to trade them when they should be focusing on their schoolwork.  They’re so popular in fact, that fights have even broken out over them.

BCP Imports LLC, the Ohio company that makes the bracelets, wasn’t prepared for the mad rush. It’s increased its workforce from 20 employees to 200 in the past 12 months and has now added 22 phone lines to keep up with inquiries.

What do you think?  Should Silly Bandz be banned?
