New York rap artist Shyne is slated to be released from prison today. The 30 year-old rapper (real name: Jamal Barrow) was handed 10 years in prison back in June of 2001 for charges related to a much publicized 1999 shooting involving Diddy and Jennifer Lopez.
Shyne has been incarcerated for more than 8 years at Riker’s Island…Woodbourne and Clinton Correctional Facility.
He managed to release two albums during that time, 1999′s self-titled CD (on Bad Boy Records) and 2004′s “Godfather Buried Alive” (release by Def Jam), which included a track he actually recorded over the phone while in prison.
Diddy had this to say regarding Shyne’s release from prison:
“It’s a blessing that he’s coming home…I spoke to him like a couple of weeks ago and he sounded like he was in good spirits. I know he can’t wait to get home. I know he is definitely going to heat the whole scene up. He was definitely one of [many] talented young artists that I had the pleasure to work with. I’m quite sure he’s been using his time wisely and has some heat.”
