George Zimmerman’s wife Shellie Zimmerman has been arrested and charged with perjury.
Seminole County sheriffs took Shellie Zimmerman into custody at the home where she had been hiding out on one count of perjury, the latest repercussion to result from a series of taped phone conversations that put her husband back behind bars just over a week ago.
It took a little more than an hour for Shellie Zimmerman, 25, to pay the $1,000 bond after prosecutors filed a warrant claiming that she “knowingly made a false statement” during her husband’s initial bond hearing back on April 20.
On April 9, George Zimmerman, who stands accused of shooting and killing an unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, had launched the site therealgeorgezimmerman.com. Within weeks, he received more than $200,000 in donations to help with his legal expenses. During the bond hearing on April 20, though, Shellie Zimmerman testified that the couple was financially indigent.
Appearing via telephone, when asked by her husband’s attorney Mark O’Mara if they had any major financial assets, she replied “no.”
She was questioned about their finances again during cross examination. Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda asked her, “In terms of the ability of your husband to make a bond amount, you all had no money, is that correct?”
Shellie Zimmerman responded “yes.”
At a June 1 hearing, prosecutors presented surprise evidence that included at least four jailhouse telephone conversations in which George and Shellie Zimmerman were seemingly discussing tiny amounts of money, but were actually referring to some of the $200,000 supporters had donated into his personal PayPal account.
At the time of those recordings, George Zimmerman had just been recently arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
