NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman of the San Diego Chargers was arrested early Sunday following a domestic incident.
Shawne Merriman was taken into custody after police were called to the scene at about 3:45 a.m.
Merriman is accused of battering and choking his girlfriend, MTV reality show hostess and model Tila Nguyen, A.K.A. Tila Tequila. He then physically prevented her from leaving his house, according to police reports.
Nguyen completed a citizen’s arrest complaint at the scene charging Merriman with battery as well as false imprisonment. She was then was taken to a local hospital.
Shawne Merriman, from the University of Maryland, was set free just after 11 a.m. on Sunday.
“It’s disappointing to hear about the issue involving Shawne Merriman,” Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said in a written statement. “We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.”
