I admit it. So far, I’m not a big fan of Google Health.
Why would I want a web search company to know my heart rate and the intimate details that make up my medical profile?
Now, they have introduced another way you can send your sensitive medical data across the net, although, to be fair, it does sound like you have a fair amount of control of the info in question.
Today, they rolled out a new “Share this profile” function, allowing you to let others that you trust to have access to your medical records.
When you log on to Google Health, you just select “Share this Profile” and enter the e-mail address of the person with whom you want to share your info. Google Health will send that person an e-mail containing a link to your profile.
The link will ONLY work when accessed from the e-mail address of that individual – it will NOT work if the e-mail is forwarded on to someone else.
You can also deactivate the feature at any time and you can closely track who has access to your information.
There are also some extra safeguards in place:
- The link to your profile expires after 30 days
- Viewers can only SEE — not edit — your info
- You can review an activity report to see who has viewed your profile
There are a few other bells and whistles included which you can read about on the Official Google Blog here.
