Sally Meyerhoff, the woman who won the women’s division of last year’s P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon, was killed yesterday in a tragic cycling accident.
Meyerhoff, 27, failed to yield at a stop sign and was hit by a pickup truck in Arizona. She was killed on impact.
Meyerhoff also participated in triathlons and had qualified for last year’s Ironman World Championships as an amateur.
In addition to her victory last year, Sally Meyerhoff also won the 2009 USA 25-K title and was last year’s Fitness Magazine Half-Marathon champion in New York. She also won the XTERRA Trail Running World Championship Half-Marathon in Hawaii last December.
Meyerhoff recently posted the following note to her Facebook page:
“I love my life, especially my dogs ♥ Barney♥ Wilbur ♥ Winston ♥ and now Maxx ♥. I would do absolutely anything for those that I love. A Duke Blue Devil forever
I still miss the unbelievably gorgeous campus…”
Sally Meyerhoff was scheduled to run the NYC Half-Marathon on March 20 and defend her Fitness Magazine title on April 3.
