There’s some good news today for the homeless victim of that brutal, zombie-like cannibal attack in Miami just a few weeks ago.
Doctors say Ronald Poppo is alert, walking around, and very upbeat.
Doctors have released photos of Poppo more than two weeks after the homeless man had 50 percent of his face chewed off during an attack by Rudy Eugene over the Memorial Day weekend.
Officials at Jackson Memorial Hospital told the media yesterday that Poppo is awake and alert and showed a picture of Poppo walking down a hospital hallway, supported by hospital staff.
The photo shows the upper two-thirds of Poppo’s face covered in scabs. He’s missing his nose and both eyes sockets are covered, one with gauze and one with what would seem to be a skin graft.
“I’m pleased to say he’s doing well,” said Dr. Nicolas Namais.
Doctors are hopeful that Poppo may regain some vision in the future, but it’s too early to know for sure.
His left eye was gouged out in the attack, but his right eye is still there.
Doctors said Poppo sustained a minor brain injury and two wounds that possibly came from the officer’s gun who shot Eugene to stop the assault. The object broke two of Poppo’s ribs.
Poppo is not taking any major medications at this time, just antibiotics for a minor infection.
Ronald Poppo is said to be charming and positive and he can’t wait to go swimming again. He’s even been rooting for his favorite team, the Miami Heat.
The Jackson Memorial Foundation has established a fund to help Poppo with his medical expenses. So far they’ve raised $15,000.
Donations can be made through Neighbors 4 Neighbors by calling (305) 597-4404.
