Gabrielle Giffords

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona has been shot in the head while holding a public event outside a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona.

It seems that as many as 12 other people were injured when an unidentified man ran up and started shooting as Giffords addressed supporters outside a local Safeway.

Early reports indicate that Giffords was shot point blank in the head. Darci Slaten, a spokeswoman for University Medical Center in Tucson, said Giffords was undergoing surgery Saturday afternoon for a gunshot wound to the head (this is an update to earlier reports from NPR.com that Giffords had been killed).

Giffords, 40, was in the middle of hosting her first “Congress on Your Corner” event at the Tucson Safeway.

The gunman is reportedly now in custody.

Giffords, a Democrat, is married to astronaut Mark Kelly. She took office in January 2007.
