Reading Rainbow, the wildly popular PBS television series hosted by LeVar Burton, airs for the last time on Friday after 26 years on the air.
Burton was also famous for his role as Kunta Kinte in Roots, or as Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Each episode of Reading Rainbow had the same basic outline…a special children’s book that led to an adventure with Levar Burton. At the end of each episode, children presented their own book reviews, always prefaced by Burton’s trademark line: “But you don’t have to take my word for it …”
Reading Rainbow is / was the third-longest-running show on PBS behind Sesame Street and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
